SUMMARY:Zoom - "The cathedral stands grand and unhurt" ..... "though the streets burn": the bombing of Canterbury in 1942.
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 1st June 2027\, 10:00-11:15\nOnline via Zoom\nVirtual – speaker Julian Waltho \nIf you can’t make this morning’s talk a recording will be broadcast today at 8pm (UK) \nConvert to times in your own part of the world clock here \n \nAbout the Talk\nJust after midnight on 31st May/1st June\, 85 years ago\, the citizens of Canterbury awoke to the first heavy bombing of the city. There had been strafing and bombs dropped by aircraft returning from major industrial targets but this was the first time the City of Canterbury\, a market town\, had been the prime target of an air raid. Two more raids followed in the same week with a further raid on 31st October 1942. In these four raids 76 people lost their lives\, whilst many more were injured and made homeless. These four raids are often referred to as the Baedeker Raids. Why were they called the Baedeker Raids\, why did Hitler order a heavy raid on a non industrial target\, and how did the city and citizens cope? \nAbout the speaker:\nJulian Waltho\, a history graduate of Oxford University\, taught History for 12 years in international schools in Rome Italy becoming fluent in Italian. Returning home he took up teaching posts in Kent and was 6th Form Head at Chatham House Grammar School\, Ramsgate\, and Deputy Head followed by Head Master of Kent College Senior School\, Canterbury. Upon retirement Julian has kept up his great interest in History becoming qualified both as a Green Badge Guide and a guide in Canterbury Cathedral. Recently he has been heavily involved with commemorating the civilian casualties of WWII. This resulted in an information board being placed in the Cty Cemetery at Westgate Court Avenue\, which is the final resting place for many who died due to enemy action in WWII. Julian is currently undertaking more research into the fourth raid on Canterbury on 31st October 1942. \nAbout Virtual talks for Kent Family History Society’s members.\n• Register in advance – a joining link will be sent to you.\n• Meetings open between 15 and 5 minutes before the start time\n• It can be helpful to download Zoom’s free app\, but it is not obligatory.\n• Can’t attend after registering? DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 6th July 2027\, 20:00-21:15\nOnline – via Zoom\nVirtual-speaker Dr Michelle Crowther \nIf you can’t make this talk a recording will be broadcast tomorrow\, Wednesday 7th July 2027 at 10am (UK)\nConvert to times in your own part of the world clock here. \nAbout the Talk\nThis talk will explore the works of Susie Colyer Nethersole (1869-1956)\, the author of 8 novels set in East Kent\, and consider the ways in which she wrote about the Kentish landscape. Her attention to detail is finely observed through weather and the changing seasons. Her stories show a tough grittily realistic rural life for her characters\, who struggle as well as thrive\, as modernity threatens their traditions. It’s her “warts and all” portrayal of Kent’s rural past that marks her out as more than just a writer of romance fiction. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr Michelle Crowther is an Academic Librarian at Christ Church University Canterbury and co-lead of the Kent Maps Online project. Her research interests include Victorian and Edwardian literature\, manuscript magazines\, biography\, rural writers\, and 19th century Canterbury. \nAbout Virtual talks for Kent Family History Society’s members.\n• Register in advance – Zoom will send you the joining details.\n• Meetings open between 15 and 5 minutes before the start time\n• It can be helpful to download Zoom’s free app\, but it is not obligatory.\n• Can’t attend after registering?
