Convert to times in your own part of the world here < World Clock >. \nAbout the talk\nThis talk describes the results of a project during which eighty women recorded their memories of life in Britain during the pivotal period 1946-1969 – a time when we moved from liberty bodices to mini skirts and from ration books to ready meals. We saw the emergence of youth culture\, the comprehensive education system\, conspicuous consumerism and feminism. Either come and reminisce or discover what life was like at the time. \nThis talk is much more than just a collection of memories. The techniques described will help both men and women\, of all ages\, to start writing reminiscences of their own. \nAbout the speaker\nJanet Few is an experienced and qualified family\, social and community historian who lectures regularly on these subjects throughout the UK and overseas. She has spoken at many national and international genealogical events and is also a well known author. Her particular interests include women's history\, the history of the marginalised and seventeenth century social history. She is actively involved in several family and local history societies and is currently serving as the President of the Family History Federation. He settled in Chatham where he became a journeyman tailor. But when the new tailors’ union went on strike in 1834\, he lost his job. A leading figure in the Chartist movement (Britain’s first popular mass political movement) he was transported to Australia for allegedly planning an uprising against the British government. \nAbout the speaker:\nDr Jeremy Clarke is Education Officer for Medway Council’s Heritage Team. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 1st June 2027\, 10:00-11:15\nOnline via Zoom\nVirtual – speaker Julian Waltho \nIf you can’t make this morning’s talk a recording will be broadcast today at 8pm (UK) \nConvert to times in your own part of the world clock here \n \nAbout the Talk\nJust after midnight on 31st May/1st June\, 85 years ago\, the citizens of Canterbury awoke to the first heavy bombing of the city. There had been strafing and bombs dropped by aircraft returning from major industrial targets but this was the first time the City of Canterbury\, a market town\, had been the prime target of an air raid. Two more raids followed in the same week with a further raid on 31st October 1942. In these four raids 76 people lost their lives\, whilst many more were injured and made homeless. These four raids are often referred to as the Baedeker Raids. Why were they called the Baedeker Raids\, why did Hitler order a heavy raid on a non industrial target\, and how did the city and citizens cope? \nAbout the speaker:\nJulian Waltho\, a history graduate of Oxford University\, taught History for 12 years in international schools in Rome Italy becoming fluent in Italian. Returning home he took up teaching posts in Kent and was 6th Form Head at Chatham House Grammar School\, Ramsgate\, and Deputy Head followed by Head Master of Kent College Senior School\, Canterbury. Upon retirement Julian has kept up his great interest in History becoming qualified both as a Green Badge Guide and a guide in Canterbury Cathedral. Recently he has been heavily involved with commemorating the civilian casualties of WWII. This resulted in an information board being placed in the Cty Cemetery at Westgate Court Avenue\, which is the final resting place for many who died due to enemy action in WWII. Her attention to detail is finely observed through weather and the changing seasons. Her stories show a tough grittily realistic rural life for her characters\, who struggle as well as thrive\, as modernity threatens their traditions. It’s her “warts and all” portrayal of Kent’s rural past that marks her out as more than just a writer of romance fiction. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr Michelle Crowther is an Academic Librarian at Christ Church University Canterbury and co-lead of the Kent Maps Online project.
